The reasons people seek therapy are often very varied. Some of the most common are depression, anxiety, grief, anger, stress, lacking confidence, wanting greater self-awareness, relationship and career struggles, or generally feeling dissatisfied with the way things are.
But you may not be sure what's wrong, just that you don’t feel great. Emotional distress shows itself in many different ways...in feeling tired, drained, confused, irritable, low in motivation and energy, having difficulty sleeping and feeling a bit out of control or stuck.
Talking is a powerful tool in itself, it creates clarity and understanding. But therapy with me also offers the chance to learn new ways of approaching difficult experiences and emotions. My approach uses the insights from both Existential Psychology and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.
What is Existential Therapy?
Existential therapy is a philosophical approach that explores human difficulties through the lens of our shared human experience.
From this point of view, whilst life can be full of wonder and joy, we also have to navigate certain conflicts and struggles…and it is in working with the struggle rather than against it that we can live well.
Existential therapy can help you to…
· Create meaning and purpose in your life
· Make positive choices in the face of uncertainty
· Explore and live by your values
· Use anxiety as a signpost for change
· Navigate relationships with courage
· And use the knowledge of mortality to enhance the present
What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
Where Existential therapy is philosophical, CBT is practical. And for this reason they make a powerful combination. CBT helps people to see how their way of perceiving and interpreting events in their lives affects their feelings and actions. But also provides great techniques to help people gain new experiences, change unhelpful patterns and manage their emotions.
CBT can help you to…
· Regulate and manage emotions
· Change unhelpful cycles of behaviour
· Understand why you do what you do
· Increase your self-confidence
· Live by your strengths not your weaknesses
· Take action in the face of fear
WHAT IS EXISTENTIAL COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY?
A powerful integration of philosophical enquiry and practical techniques. This will give you the confidence to change what you can change, accept and navigate what you can't and live life according to what's important to you.
